Jean R. Beers Scholarship

Our FY24 Scholarship is now closed. Click here for more details on the FY24 application (Spring 2024 application date, for enrollment in 2024-2025 academic year).

Congratulations to Teresa Nguyen from Yale University for being selected as our FY24 recipient!

The purpose of the Connecticut Section Scholarship program is to provide encouragement and financial assistance to women who are pursuing careers in engineering and related technical and scientific disciplines.

Our scholarship program is very important to our goal of reaching parity at the workplace: female enrollment in engineering colleges is still only about 20% contrasted to 50% in medicine and law.

Jean R. Beers, a SWE Connecticut Section member, was determined that young women who were interested in engineering as a profession would get the support and resources that had not been available to her during her early career. Ms. Beers started the scholarship fund for this reason with personal resources in 1974 and it was due exclusively to her efforts that the fund grew in the early years.

Our first scholarships were awarded in 1984. At the time of Ms. Beers passing in 1987, the Connecticut Section renamed its scholarship program in her honor. In the same spirit today, our scholarship continues to provide direct, meaningful assistance to female students who might otherwise not be able to complete their studies.

The Jean R. Beers SWE CT scholarship has been endowed through the SWE Board of Trustees! This endowment will provide a minimum $1,000 scholarship each year in perpetuity. If you would like to make donations directly to our scholarship fund, you can continue to email checks to SWE-CT, or donate online through the SWE BoT website.
